Winds send tree onto Idlewild wires

From Local Sources

JASPER — Units of the Dubois Volunteer Fire Department were called to Idlewild Lake east of Jasper when strong winds sent a tree across power wires Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to the scene in the 1200 block of Idlewild Lake Road at 9 p.m.

Winds in the area had gusted to more than 40 mph Saturday evening.

Department spokesman Zach Eichmiller said the top of a tree sparked and smoldered when winds sent it into contact with power wires.

“It looked like a giant cigarette,” Eichmiller said regarding the smoking tree.

Firefighters secured the scene until a Dubois Rural Electric Cooperative crew could cut the tree from the wires and reset breakers.

Two trucks and five firefighters were on the scene 30 minutes.
