Wildcat wrestlers receive awards

JASPER — The Jasper High School wrestling team recently distributed postseason honors at the team’s banquet. Nathan Schitter and Grant Brescher shared MVP honors and both were also presented with the Joe Rohleder Award of Excellence. Brescher also captured the Bob Schitter Takedown Award, while other honors went to Edgar Chevez (Team Motivator Award), Cory Hoffman (Iron Man Award), Kirk Stenftenagel (Kelli Eckert Spirit Award, Eli Green Mental Attitude Award, Fastest Pin Award — eight seconds), Dillon Wagner (Joe McComish Wrestling and Football Scholarship, John Becher Sportsmanship Award), Ruger Kerstiens (coaches award), Dillon Hurst (most improved, Record Breaker Award for 16 takedowns in a match) and Tommy Brock (freshman award).

Also, Chevez, Hoffman, Stenftenagel and Wagner collected senior awards. Chevez, Kerstiens, Schitter, Cole Kreilein, Ian Songer and Moises Valenciano were all named to the All-Big Eight Conference first team, while Hoffman, Stenftenagel, Wagner, Brescher, Hurst, Brock and Cory Buchta were also on the all-conference group. Chevez, Kerstiens, Schitter, Brescher, Kreilein, Songer and Valenciano were all recognized for winning individual sectional championships, and Schitter and Brescher added awards for claiming regional championships. Additionally, Hoffman, Stenftenagel, Wagner were picked to the academic all-state team for seniors, while Kerstiens, Schitter and Thad Harmon were academic all-state for juniors.

Ben Popp and Trent Smith shared MVP honors for the JV squad. Also, retiring coach Rick Stenftenagel was presented a plaque for accumulating 410 career victories.
