Jack Lampert of Jasper, 5, watched as John Toy of Jasper instructed a group of youth on the best place to shoot a turkey — in the wattle — during the Dubois County Sportsmen Club’s Michael Oeding Youth Turkey Seminar at the Ireland Sportsman’s Club in Ireland on Saturday. “Part of being a hunter is teaching the youth how to hunt,” Toy said. “There’s so much for kids to be interested in these days, we’re just trying to get them interested in the outdoors.” Thirteen youth participated in the seminar which included lectures on turkey biology, hunting laws and safety, and breakout sessions for calling, blinds, decoys and locating birds.

Grant Stinson of Velpen blew his mouth call during Saturday's seminar.

Austin Gehlhausen of Ireland, 11, practiced using his slate call while Carter Himsel of Jasper, 6, looked at turkey feet during Saturday's seminar.

Toy, left, had Carter Himsel of Jasper, 6, Austin Gehlhausen of Ireland, 11, and Gavin Knies of Dubois, 12, practice estimating distances during Saturday's seminar.
