Welding students excel in competition

Pike Central Vocational Welding students swept the top five places at the Region 4 Skills USA Welding Contest held at Vincennes University on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Six Pike Central Vocational Welding students competed with Forest Park senior Swayde Morgan placing first. He received a $2,500 scholarship from Vincennes University. 

Placing second was Pike Central senior Gage Cummings. He received a $1,000 scholarship from Vincennes University.

Placing third was Forest Park senior Nick Werner. He received a $500 scholarship from Vincennes University. Placing fourth was Forest Park senior Elliott Wiseman. He received a $500 scholarship from Vincennes University. 

Placing fifth was Pike Central senior Caleb Thomas. He received a $500 scholarship from Vincennes University.      

The top five students from each region will advance to the state contest that will be held at J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis on April 19 and 20. The state winner will represent the State of Indiana at the national contest held during the last week in June in Louisville. 

Students were evaluated on a 100-question welding theory written test.

The shielded metal arc welding process required welding a tube to a plate in the vertical position using a 1/8th inch E7018 and E6010 electrodes.

The gas tungsten arc welding process required welding a flat square groove butt joint.

The gas metal arc welding process required welding a flat tee joint, lap joint and a square groove butt joint.

The top five students from each region will advance to the state contest April 19 and 20 at the J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis. The state winner will represent Indiana at the national contest during the last week of June in Louisville.
