OTWELL — Three departments responded when fire destroyed a house south of Otwell Saturday morning.
The Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department based in Otwell was dispatched at 9:48 a.m. to the Troy Stewart property at 1131 S. 900E.
Fire Chief Chris Young said the home’s occupants were tending livestock at the time of the fire. One resident returned to the house, opened a door and discovered black smoke, which is when authorities were called.
The Petersburg and Ireland fire departments were called for tanker and manpower assistance.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office scheduled to assist today.
The Stewarts had insurance and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, Young said.
Six trucks and about two dozen firefighters from the three departments were on the scene two and a half hours.
