Warrant suspect charged for pursuit

BIRDSEYE — A Birdseye man arrested during the weekend on a domestic battery warrant was formerly charged with reckless driving and four felonies this week as the result of the 10-mile pursuit when he was taken into custody.


The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department had sought and secured a warrant Friday in Dubois Circuit Court charging Steven L. Mundy, 58, 8498 S. State Road 145, Birdseye, with a Level 6 felony count of strangulation and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery after investigating an incident last week in Birdseye.

A deputy and Indiana State Police troopers were in Mundy’s driveway at 8:25 p.m. Friday attempting to serve the warrant when Mundy started to drive in, then put his truck in reverse at a high speed and sped away southbound on State Road 145 with police in pursuit.

As the pursuit passed a bridge west of Anderson River along State Road 62 in Perry County, a deputy observed Mundy extend his arm out the driver’s window and throw several white items from the vehicle.

Mundy’s truck ran over tire deflation devices near state roads 145 and 62. He vehicle was disabled and he was taken into custody a few miles down the road near St. Croix.

Police say the tossed items that were retrieved were 16.9 grams of methamphetamine allegedly package separately as if they were ready for sale or distribution.

As a result, Mundy was charged Monday in Dubois Circuit Court with a Level 2 felony count of dealing methamphetamine, a Level 4 felony count of possession of methamphetamine and Level 6 felony counts of resisting law enforcement and obstruction of justice, plus a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.

Mundy remains lodged in the Dubois County Security Center.
