Warrant brings Evansville man to jail

JASPER — A Vanderburgh County man was booked into the Dubois County Security Center last week on a warrant alleging he stole from the Jasper Walmart.
Charging information alleges that on June 22, 2019, Joseph D. Stewart, 41, Evansville, took merchandise valued at $681 from the 4040 N. Newton Street store.
The Jasper Police Department investigated and, on Feb. 20, a warrant was issued out of Dubois Superior Court charging Stewart with Level 6 felony theft, with authorities noting the defendant has previously been convicted of theft, which raises the new charge to a felony.
Authorities booked Stewart into the Dubois County Security Center at 12:03 p.m. Thursday on the active warrant. During an initial hearing Friday, Stewart requested court-appointed counsel and a speedy trial. The court set his bond at $1,000 cash only.
