MONON — Dashcam video released this week shows the moments before police fatally shot an Indiana man who had abducted his daughter and led officers on a chase in northwestern Indiana.
The Journal and Courier reported the video from the March 28 incident shows 36-year-old Peter Doffin exiting his vehicle with a knife in his hand and approaching officers along U.S. 421 in southern Pulaski County.
Doffin ignores orders to show his hands and get on the ground, according to the police video. Officers fire shots as Doffin disappears to the left side of the camera’s frame.
Doffin died from blood loss due to multiple gunshot wounds, according to Pulaski County Coroner John Behny.
Pulaski County Prosecutor Daniel Murphy reviewed the footage and a 195-page report compiled by Indiana State Police. Murphy said a Monon police officer and three sheriff’s deputies from Tippecanoe and Pulaski counties were involved in the shooting, and that the law officers “properly used deadly force to protect themselves and others.”
No criminal charges were filed against the officers.
The low-speed pursuit began at 5 a.m. and lasted for more than an hour through five counties. It came to an end when Doffin’s SUV drove over several sets of stop sticks which flattened the vehicle’s tires. Doffin’s daughter wasn’t injured in the incident.
