One hundred and sixty-one descendants of Herman and Mary Verkamp met on Sunday, July 15, at the Schnellville Community Club in Schnellville for a family reunion. A fried chicken meal catered by Patty Burke with carry in dishes was served at 1 p.m. The reunion committee was Carla Hochgesang, Gerry Verkamp, Tammy Mehringer and Danny Schnell.

The afternoon was spent playing cards and socializing.
On June 28, 1837, John Gerhard and Adelheide Katherine Verkamp from Schapen, Germany, arrived in New York City. From there, they moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1841, their son, Herman Lucas, was born and later he and the family moved to Ferdinand. On Jan. 23, 1872, Herman Lucas married Mary A. Wilmes. Together they had 11 children. Every five years since 1978, the Herman and Mary Verkamp descendants have gathered to share memories.
The next reunion will be held in 2023. The committee will be Barb Gehlhausen, Becky Ubelhor, Charlene Kern, Donna Schnell and Donna Verkamp.
