U.S. Census: County, communities see growth

The townships, cities and towns in Dubois County have, for the most part, grown in population over the years.

Some have lost a person or two. But the population as a whole has increased since last year, according the U.S. Census Bureau, which released new population estimates Thursday.

The latest numbers are as of July 1, 2018.

According to the estimates, the county’s five incorporated areas had some increases in population from July 2017 to July 2018.

Jasper’s population estimate, as of July 2018, is 15,568, which is more than its 2017 estimate of 15,504. Its population in the 2010 U.S. Census, the last official Census taken, was 15,038.

Huntingburg’s 2018 population estimate is 6,124, which is 10 more than its 2017 estimate of 6,114. The city’s 2010 tally was 6,057 people.

Ferdinand saw a gain of 31 people between 2017 and 2018. It’s 2018 estimate is 2,233 people, more than the 2017 estimate of 2,202 people. The town’s 2010 Census total was 2,157.

Holland and Birdseye each saw a population increase of one person.

Holland’s latest population estimate is 624, its 2017 estimate was 623 and its 2010 population total was 626. For Birdseye, its estimate for 2018 is 418, one more than its 2017 tally of 417 and two more than its 2010 Census total of 416.

Township totals were also available. The 2018, 2017, and 2010 Census tallies for townships in Dubois County are:

• Bainbridge Township 16,527; 16,472; 16,020

• Boone Township 807; 809; 799

• Cass Township 2,119; 2,121; 2,115

• Columbia Township 1,070; 1,070; 1,065

• Ferdinand Township 3,707; 3,679; 3,629

• Hall Township 1,288; 1,291; 1,281

• Harbison Township 1,585; 1,589; 1,588

• Jackson Township 2,134; 2,136; 2,125

• Jefferson Township 1,552; 1,553; 1,543

• Madison Township 2,704; 2,703; 2,696

• Marion Township 1,479; 1,482; 1,501

• Patoka Township 7,593; 7,586; 7,527

Dubois County as a whole has increased by 74 people. The county’s July 2018 population estimate is 42,565, more than its 2017 estimate of 42,491. Dubois County’s Census total in 2010 was 41,889.

The state’s population has also increased, from 6,660,082 in 2017 to 6,691,878 in 2018. Indiana’s population total per the 2010 Census was 6,483,802.
