JASPER — The Jasper Police Department worked an accident Thursday afternoon in which a tree fell onto a woman’s late-model SUV while she was driving in the 1800 block of Newton Street.

Dorothy Hall, 76, Jasper, was southbound on Newton Street in a 2017 Ford SUV when the 5:09 p.m. accident occurred as she approached Matthew Avenue, according to police.

Authorities said a tree in the lawn at 1825 Newton St. was blown down at the same time the Hall SUV was driving past.

Hall escaped injury when the tree fell on her Ford, causing damage estimated at $5,000. The incident damaged the SUV’s hood, windshield and top.

Police said Newton Street’s southbound lane was shut down for about an hour until crews could remove the tree.
