Top Knot beauty salon to open in JasperOctober 27, 2020

JASPER — About five years ago, Taylor Sternberg’s career path shifted from therapy to hair-apy. The Jasper stylist is now set to open a new beauty salon on Jackson Street in just a few days.
Opening her own salon is Sternberg’s dream. And as it all comes together, the reality is exceeding her vision.
“Honestly, growing up, I never had a ton of confidence,” Sternberg said. “And I just like the feeling, like when someone [comes] in and they look to you [as a] confidant. They want to talk to you and they don’t know you, so they know you can’t judge them. And they tell you their life story and things they’ve been through and why they want to chop their hair off.”
Top Knot Beauty Studio will welcome guests for hair stylings, wedding makeup and more when it launches on Sunday. Sternberg will own and operate the business at 506 Jackson St., which is located near Pub ‘N’ Grub.
She wanted to study psychology in college before graduating from Jasper High School in 2014. After moving into her own apartment at the age of 17, however, she realized that going to school full time for psychology wouldn’t be easy. She’d need a flexible job to make it work.
The solution: She’d learn how to cut hair. But after graduating from Roger’s Academy of Hair Design in 2015, she decided to take psychology off the table and pursue a career as a stylist.
“I wanted to create a drama-free workplace where I can control a lot of things,” she said when speaking about her decision to open her own salon. “I’m not the type of person that kind of feeds into drama. And with this industry, sometimes that is easy to fall into. I wanted to create a fun-loving area for stylists to come together to work at and support each other.”
Helping people feel beautiful creates a strong emotional connection between Taylor and her clients. She worked at iCandy Salon and Spa — now the Beauty Bar Jasper — from the time she graduated from Roger’s until January. At that time, she moved to Shades Hair and Nail Studio, which is located on the north side of Jasper, while laying the framework for her own salon.
“I very much take pride in my work,” she said, later adding that, “every day I kind of just wake up and have the mindset that today I’m going to do better than yesterday. And I really take into consideration my clients’ needs and wants.”
Sternberg said Thursday that she is currently working in the Top Knot space by herself as she looks for the perfect team of stylists. Her vision for the space has guided recent renovations that include knocking out and painting walls and installing new doorways and flooring.
The studio will officially open on Sunday, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held with the Jasper Chamber of Commerce at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6. An open house will be held with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments until 7 p.m.
The new business will follow social distancing guidelines and include a sanitation station. Clients can schedule appointments on the Beauty by Taylor Facebook page (the name will soon change its name to Top Knot Beauty Studio) or by phone at 812-631-4893. Clients can stop by for walk-in visits, too.
Sternberg lives in Jasper with her husband, Nick, and their children: Sawyer, 6; Ivy, 4; and Rosalind, 16 months.
