Taking responsibility is the first necessary stepJuly 6, 2020
To the editor:
Democratic County Chairman: “I am responsible… I am the county chair."
Republican 45th President of The United States: “I don’t take responsibility at all."
The ancient proverb, most likely originating with the Persian poet Rumi in 1273 and translated as “fish stinks from the head down,” is today expressed worldwide as “a fish rots from the head down.” The proverb tells us that when an organization or a state fails, it is the leadership that is the root cause. Dominant nations of the world continually fail throughout history, and political organizations have failed in our country.
Admitting a mistake and taking responsibility is the first necessary step that leadership must take in order to avoid failure of the nation or the political organization. Authoritarian regimes invite failure. Voters would be wise to keep their eyes open and this proverb in mind until election day, and during future years, beginning in January of 2021.
