The pandemonium that is known as boys basketball sectional season officially kicked off on Sunday afternoon when the draws were announced for each sectional throughout the state.
Here’s a brief rundown of the pairings for our five local teams.
Class 4A at Evansville North
Once again, Jasper will battle Evansville Harrison in the sectional opener.
The Wildcats (13-8) will face off against the Warriors (12-9) in the second game on Tuesday. Jasper beat Harrison 73-60 in the season opener this year and knocked them out of the sectional last season with a 65-57 victory.
With a win, Jasper will face Evansville North (5-15) in the semifinal. The Cats beat the Huskies 58-51 earlier this year.
Castle (17-4) and Evansville Central (8-12) will meet for the other opening night game with the winner facing Evansville Reitz (10-11) on Friday.
Class 3A at Boonville
The Boonville sectional will be interesting from the get go as Evansville Bosse (15-6) and Heritage Hills (20-1) — the two teams with the best record in the sectional — will meet each other on opening night.
With a win, Heritage Hills will face Evansville Memorial (12-9) in the Friday semifinal game. The Patriots defeated the Tigers 57-36 earlier this year.
Mount Vernon (2-21) gets the bye and will face the winner of Gibson Southern (5-15) and Boonville (5-16).
Class 3A at Washington
Southridge will once again open its sectional by facing Sullivan.
The Raiders (17-5) will face the Golden Arrows (12-10) in the second game on the first day of the sectional.
With a win, Southridge will face Princeton (17-4) in the second semifinal game on Friday. Princeton defeated the Raiders 53-48 earlier this year.
The host Hatchets (14-7) will face Pike Central (3-19) in the opening game with the winner facing Vincennes Lincoln (9-13) in the first semifinal on Friday.
Class 2A at Forest Park
While this sectional is technically hosted by Forest Park, it will take place at Huntingburg Memorial Gym.
The Rangers (13-9) will face Perry Central (8-14) in the second game on Wednesday evening. With a victory, Forest Park will face either Evansville Mater Dei (13-7) or South Spencer (8-14) in the second semifinal on Friday night.
Forest Park defeated the Commodores 60-44 in the first meeting. The Rangers also defeated the Rebels 68-44 but lost to the Wildcats 69-48.
The opening game of the sectional is between North Posey (6-16) and Tecumseh (12-10). The winner will face Tell City (17-5) in the first semifinal game on Friday.
Class 1A at Wood Memorial
Northeast Dubois (8-13) will face Cannelton (9-13) on the opening night of the sectional in Oakland City on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
With a victory over Cannelton, Northeast Dubois will face Evansville Day (8-10) in the semifinal on Friday.
The Jeeps defeated the Bulldogs 68-36 in Dubois earlier this year but did not face Day School during the regular season.
The other semifinal game will be between Wood Memorial (7-14) and Springs Valley (16-6).
The Jeeps defeated the Trojans 55-46 but lost to the Blackhawks 60-49. Valley is the defending sectional champions.
