Suspense builds as sectional draw announcedJanuary 20, 2019
From Herald Staff Reports
On Sunday afternoon, the IHSAA officially announced the girls basketball sectional pairings for the postseason tournaments across the state of Indiana.
What should you be on the lookout for in each of the area sectional contests? Here’s a brief rundown of Jasper, Southridge, Forest Park, Northeast Dubois and Heritage Hills’ sectional outlook.
Class 4A at Jasper: Hosting their 4A sectional for the first time, the Wildcats (14-7) will look to avenge an earlier 47-26 loss to Evansville North (10-11) in the first game of postseason play on Tuesday, January 29.
If the Cats are victorious, they’ll meet up with Evansville Reitz (3-15) in the Friday, February 1 semifinal.
The other Tuesday game is defending sectional champ Castle (17-3) against Evansville Harrison (3-13). The winner will face Evansville Central (3-15) in the second semifinal game on Friday.
Class 3A at Vincennes Lincoln: Southridge (5-13) will get another chance to duplicate Myah Montgomery’s 38-point performance from earlier this year as the Raiders open sectional play against Pike Central (5-14), who Montgomery lit up in an earlier overtime victory.
If victorious, Southridge would face Princeton (13-7) in the Friday semifinal game.
The other game on Tuesday is Sullivan (13-8) and defending sectional champ Vincennes Lincoln (18-3). The winner of that game will face Washington (14-6) in the semifinal.
Class 3A at Gibson Southern: Heritage Hills (16-4) will get to rest easy to start as they’ll have a bye into the semifinal round.
They’ll face the winner of Gibson Southern (18-3) and Evansville Bosse (7-10). The Titans defeated the Patriots in their regular season meeting — the defeat ended Heritage Hills’ nine-game winning streak and undefeated home record.
Mount Vernon (11-9) and Boonville (7-13) will face off in the other opening night game with the winner facing defending sectional champ Evansville Memorial (12-8) in the other semifinal matchup.
Class 2A at Forest Park: Once again, the Rangers (10-12) will host the sectional and for the fourth consecutive year they’ll open postseason play against Evansville Mater Dei (10-10).
The Wildcats defeated the Rangers earlier in the season and also are the defending sectional champs.
If victorious, the Rangers would face Perry Central (3-17) in the semifinal. South Spencer (9-11) and Tell City (12-10) will battle in the other Tuesday game with the winner facing North Posey (1-18) in the semifinal.
Class 1A at Springs Valley: Northeast Dubois (5-16) will have a bye to start postseason play as they’ll await the winner of Springs Valley (14-6) and Wood Memorial (12-10).
While the Jeeps lost to both the Blackhawks and Trojans during the regular season, Northeast Dubois is well aware that the postseason is a completely different animal.
Cannelton (5-16) and Tecumseh (15-4) will battle in the other semifinal game.
