Summer road work startingMay 20, 2021
By CANDY NEAL
County highway crews will soon start summer road work.
Next week, various streets will receive surface treatment. On Monday, treatment will be laid on Holland Road East, from State Road 161 to U.S. 231. Crews will be working on that road most of the day.
“We will be running a truck back and forth to do a controlled flow of traffic through there, so that people can still get through. And we’ll have flaggers on each end,” said County Highway Supervisor Steve Berg said. “But if drivers can avoid the area while we’re doing it that day, it would be greatly appreciated.”
Crews will work on the roads in two subdivisions on Tuesday: Sermersheim Addition, which is south of Bretzville, and Arrowhead Subdivision, which is south of Ireland.
On Wednesday, treatment will be laid on County Road 300 North from Kellerville road to the river bridge at County Road 175 East, including County Road 330 North. Also being treated that day is Haysville West from just west of the Haysville community to the County Road 200 West, which is at the Harbison Township line.
Workers will treat one lane at a time, so that traffic that needs to get through can, Berg said.
More surface treatments will be done later in the summer. The company that applies rejuvenator on roads is coordinating timeframes so that it can do the work at the same time it works on designated streets in Jasper, Berg said.
Crews will work on chip-seal projects soon after Memorial Day. That work will be done for about three and a half weeks. After that, patching work will be done, Berg said.
The chip-seal overlay gives us the flexibility to repair some roads that are much older and showing signs of stress,” he said. “When we treat the roads this way, we not only improve them a little bit, but they get a new surface as well. We get as much as five to seven years of extended life by doing this.”
Starting on Tuesday, June 1, projects that will be worked on include:
• County Road 175E N of Jasper-Dubois
• County Roads 820 East and 175 South east of the Schnellville Mill to the Schnellville Conservation Club
• County Road 400 West from Old Road 64 to to County Road 750 South
• County Roads 500 West and 700 South from the State Road 64 intersection to Old Road 64
• County road 525 West and Duff Road Southeast from State Road 64 to County Road 650 West
• County Road 1025 South from State Road 161 to 320 feet east of the state road
• County Road 50 North from County Road 750 West to County Road 800 West
• Old Petersburg Road from State Road 56 to the county line
• County Road 750 West from State Road 56 to County Road 450 North
• County Road 700 West from County Road 500 North for a 3/10ths of a mile north of the intersection
Highway workers will also chip-seal Dixie Lane, which is near County Road 450 South in St. Anthony. That is being paid for by a developer who has developed a subdivision in the community.
Chip-seal work will also be done to a little more than a mile of County Road 720 East in Hall Township. This is part of the county program through which residents in an area petition and provide the right-of-way land for the work. This is the next road in a list of petitioned road requests the county has received.
