SOUTH BEND — A wintry Midwest storm packing wet snow and strong winds has closed schools in northern Indiana, while icy roads caused havoc for some central Indiana motorists.
Police say ice on a bridge contributed to an eight-vehicle pileup about 5 p.m. Monday in the town of Avon west of Indianapolis, while police in Hamilton County north of Indianapolis also responded to several ice-related accidents.
Travel also was difficult Monday morning in northern Indiana. Schools in South Bend were among those closed for the day as well as dozens of schools in northwestern Indiana.
About 2 inches of snow was reported in parts of northern Indiana by early Monday.
Scattered power outages affecting several thousand customers were reported by Indiana Michigan Power Co. and the Northern Indiana Public Service Co.
