Steven M. Roemmel, 65, ColumbusApril 20, 2020
Steven M. Roemmel, 65, of Columbus, died Friday, April 17, 2020, at home after a lengthy battle with GBM brain cancer.
He was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Seymour to Charles (Fritz) Roemmel and Phyllis Morris Roemmel.
Steve graduated from Seymour High School in 1973 and obtained Bachelor of Science degrees from Purdue University at West Lafayette in 1979 and from Illinois State University at Bloomington Illinois in 1988.
He married Kathy Mundy from Ireland on June 2, 1979. Prior to retirement, Steve and Kathy lived at various locations in Illinois during their careers. Steve retired September 2016 from Jacobs Architectural Engineering firm in St. Louis, Missouri, and they relocated to Columbus, Indiana, in June 2017.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Charles Roemmel.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy, of Columbus; his mother, Phyllis Roemmel of Columbus; and siblings, Sharon Roemmel (Theresa Cornwell) of Salem, Oregon, and Janet Roemmel (Roy Adams) of Reston, Virginia. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law by marriage and five nephews, two nieces and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.
Steve enjoyed home renovation as he circulated around Illinois and Indiana and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends with their house issues. He was a lifelong car enthusiast and heeded the advice of a good friend “Life’s too short to own a boring car.” But Steve found no car boring. He enjoyed owning, driving, and tinkering with all cars from his MGB to his Porsche Cayman, but he was particularly smitten with his Audi TT’s. The highlight of cars for Steve was the comradery with other enthusiasts, be it road trips, afternoon caravans, or simply car talk. Steve bids farewell and safe travels to his family, friends and acquaintances as he begins his final journey in search of the last open road.
The family wishes to thank the Columbus Regional Cancer Center staff, especially Dr. Wagner and Rose, for several years of care and Palliative Care and Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
In keeping with Mr. Roemmel’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation will be handled by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbus Regional Health Foundation Annual Campaign, specifically the Cancer Center, at support.foundation.crh.org or to Anderson Woods Summer Camp at Andersonwoods.org/contribute. Contributions may also be mailed to Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home, 1029 Washington St, Columbus, IN 47201.
