FERDINAND — A speeding driver went to jail on multiple preliminary charges Tuesday evening after a traffic stop north of Ferdinand.
The Ferdinand Police Department was dispatched to the report of a speeding vehicle and erratic driving at 7:17 p.m. The dispatch said the car was southbound on State Road 162 from the Bretzville area.
A Ferdinand officer located the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu at State Road 162 and Holiday Lake Road, saw it was traveling at a high rate of speed and clocked it at 64 mph in the 55 mph zone.
The officer conducted a traffic stop and detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverages coming from the car, which was owned and being driven by Ashton J. Owens, 20, of 1114 N. Jackson St., Huntingburg.
After an investigation, authorities arrested Owens and booked him into the Dubois County Security Center at 7:46 p.m. on preliminary misdemeanor counts of driving while suspended (prior), possession of paraphernalia and possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages by a minor. He was also cited for operating a motor vehicle without financial responsibility and for having expired plates.
