Speaker set for Democrats’ meeting

The Dubois County Democrats will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Knights of Columbus, 201 E. 30th St., Jasper. Refreshments will be available to order, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Trish Whitcomb, founder of the Indiana Federation of Democratic Women and campaign manager for Glenda Ritz, former Indiana State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will give a presentation at 7 p.m.

Whitcomb will speak about Socialism, the Free Market and Capitalism in a Democracy. As an investment banker, Whitcomb has been involved in creating public-private partnerships to fund projects throughout the state. Her many years in Democrat politics range from campaigning to re-elect Senator Birch Bayh in the ’70s and coordinating Dubois Democrat Chairman Mike Kendall’s U.S. Senate campaign, to managing the successful 2012 statewide campaign to elect Glenda Ritz as State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Whitcomb has many accomplishments in education, public affairs and finance at the state level. She served as special advisor to Ritz after the election to develop and implement the Hoosier Family of Readers program; collaborated on policy development with the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Indiana to combat sex abuse of school-age children; and supervised implementation of the 21st Century Learning Centers grant. Kendall and Whitcomb established TERF, The Environmental Rights Foundation in 1992. Whitcomb served as a member of the State Workforce Innovation Council, the Butler University College of Education Dean’s Advisory Council, and Board Member of Youth Build Louisville.

Whitcomb, a lifelong resident of Indiana is originally from Seymour and is the daughter of the late Governor Ed Whitcomb. She resides in Indianapolis, with her husband, Attorney Russ Sipes.
