HAYSVILLE — The Haysville Ruritan Club will host the 56th annual Sommerfest Friday and Saturday and friends and family are invited to enjoy the food, music, activities, fun and fellowship.

“The Sommerfest is like a big reunion,” said Tim Kraemer, president of the Haysville Ruritan Club. The fest is hosted at the Haysville Park.

Festgoers can kick off the weekend Friday night by grabbing a bite to eat at the various food booths, including the famous golden fried chicken and barbeque pork chop dinners, and can enjoy a beverage from the beer garden.

For those who enjoy a little friendly competition, WBDC will host a Cornhole Tourney of Champions Friday night.

New music can be enjoyed this year with live performances from Clear Creek on Friday night, and the Celebration Singers and Haywire Saturday night.

Unique to this year’s Sommerfest, there will be a dedication of Buckingham’s Base Line on U.S. 231 at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, followed by a short presentation and question-and-answer time with the Indiana Historical Bureau. There will be a shuttle service for the dedication.

“The Buckingham Baseline is important because it was the key to dividing up the land gained by the Unites States in the 1783 Treaty of Paris,” Kraemer said. “It is especially important because it was used to divide the land into pieces small enough for individuals to own instead of only the very wealthy and land speculators.”

The fest will also feature new events for family-friendly fun. Saturday will feature a new slip ‘n slide kickball tourney, divided into two age groups, ages 6-12 and 13 and older, followed by a Jeep Run later that day.

“I love the Sommerfest because I get to see people I haven’t seen for a while, maybe even people who haven’t been in the area for years,” Kraemer said. “I also get to meet area people who I don’t know but who are part of the community we share.”

Kraemer encouraged everyone to visit the Sommerfest to enjoy good people, good food and good entertainment.
