Three local middle and high school Spell Bowl teams competed in the state finals Saturday at Purdue University.
At the middle school level, Southridge Middle School won the Class 3 competition, bringing a state title to Huntingburg.
Heritage Hills Middle School also competed in the Class 3 competition, but did not place.
At the high school level, Northeast Dubois competed in the Class 4 competition, but did not place.
SMS team members include eighth graders Gabe Boeglin, Garrison Sickbert, Jazmin Uresti, Joselyn Uresti and Macaila Wilkins, seventh graders Abi Byrd, Erika Candelario and Ruthie Sherer and sixth graders Ellie Bardwell, Jack Boeglin, Nicole Fant, Michael Lau, Eli Meyer and Maddie Wright. They are coached by Jen Schutte.
Students studied a list of 1,614 words to prepare for the competition. Sherer and Fant scored nine out of nine words correctly and Uresti scored eight out of nine words correct during the competition.
