CRYSTAL — The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department arrested a motorist after a single-car crash early Sunday along a county road north of Crystal.
Robert W. Todd, 54, 314 W. Sixth St., Jasper, was northbound on Cuzco Road North in a 2007 Cadillac STS when the 2:31 a.m. accident occurred 500 feet south of County Road 750E, according to the sheriff’s department.
Todd allegedly told a deputy he had looked down at a text message on his phone and, when he looked up, his car was running off the road in a sharp curve.
The sheriff’s department said the Cadillac struck a tree off the north side of the roadway, which appeared to have gravel patches on the asphalt at the location.
Todd was not injured but was medically cleared by Memorial Emergency Medical Services because of air bag deployment, according to the sheriff’s department.
A deputy reported Todd’s blood alcohol content tested .148 percent on a certified breath test. He admitted to coming from a bar and to drinking several beers before driving, the deputy reported.
Authorities booked Todd into the Dubois County Security Center at 4:45 a.m. on a preliminary misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated.
Total damage was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
A Mark’s Garage wrecker from French Lick also assisted.
