Shirley Ann Stern, 84, Ferdinand
August 3, 2020Shirley Ann Stern, 84, of Ferdinand, lost her battle with heart and kidney disease Saturday August 1, 2020 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Evansville. Shirley was born April 28, 1936 in Jasper to Otto J. and Bertha C. (Bieker) Vonderheide. She was united in marriage to John Louis Stern on June 13, 1974 in Nevada. John preceded her in death on April 13, 1996.

Shirley was a lifelong teacher, she taught at several school systems in Indiana and California during her career. Shirley graduated from St. Benedict College in Ferdinand, then received her Masters’ Degree from Ball State University. She was nominated for teacher of the year while working at St. Bernard Catholic School in Rockport. After retirement Shirley worked at St. Meinrad Archabbey as a switchboard operator and call center worker. She was a member of Christ the King Parish, St. Ferdinand Church, and its’ St. Ann’s Sodality. She also was a member of Ferdinand Daughters of Isabella, Ferdinand Senior Citizens. Shirley was an Oblate of St. Benedict. She served as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound. She was a member of the Santa Claus Garden Club.
Surviving are one brother, David J. (Yvonne) Vonderheide of Severance, CO., four sisters, Betty (Clarence) Waninger of Ferdinand, Carol (Dennis) Waninger of Fulda, Marilyn (Paul Louis) Harpenau of Louisville, and Alice (David) Lindauer of Ferdinand, and a step-son, John Douglas Stern. Also surviving are 27 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and four brothers, Marvin, Kenneth, Otto Jr. and Leon Vonderheide.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held in Saint Ferdinand Church on Wednesday August 5, 2020 at 1:00 PM EDT, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 11:00 AM EDT until the time of the mass. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict.
