Scrap metal taking brings burglary, theft charges

From Local Sources

JASPER — Indiana State Police brought a Martin County man to jail Wednesday morning on a Dubois Circuit Court warrant charging him with felony burglary and theft.

The Dubois County Sheriff’s Department investigated when a property owner detained a man June 8 for allegedly stealing scrap metal from his pole barn.

Charles T. Kline, 44, Loogootee, allegedly stated a woman had told him he was allowed on the property and could take scrap metal out of the pole barn.

The property owner did not know Kline and was not familiar with the woman he mentioned. Items that included several vehicle rims, fishing poles and chains were in the bed of Kline’s truck when a deputy arrived on the scene.

Kline was released at that time with charges pending. A warrant for his arrest was issued June 26.

Authorities have filed a notice of intent to seek an enhanced penalty for the theft charge because of a prior theft conviction. The warrant charges Kline with a Level 5 felony count of burglary and a Level 6 felony count of theft.

Authorities booked Kline into the Dubois County Security Center at 9:38 a.m. Wednesday.
