SCHNELLVILLE — The people of Schnellville are ready to host their neighbors and visitors at their annual festival.
The Schnellville Picnic is Saturday and Sunday on the Schnellville Community Club grounds, 7855 E Market St.
Organizers are glad the event is being held once again. Last year, due to the pandemic, there were only drive-thru dinners.
This year, the games, shows, food and fun are back. The two-day event will be a lot like the ones in the past, said Myron Betz, president of the community club.
“We’re gonna run it as we usually do,” he said.
There will be a new event this time: the Texas Hold 'em tourney, which is a poker tourney.
“That's something new my boy wanted to do,” Betz said, referring to Scott Betz, his son. “He was in one up in Montgomery, and I think he won. So he was really happy about that.”
The tourney will be held Saturday in the community club’s main hall. People can register and pay the $50 entry fee starting at 9 a.m.; the tourney starts at 10 a.m. There will be an 80% payout and 20% will go to the community club. Questions can directed to Scott at 812-630-5132.
While the tourney is going on inside, there will be a car show going on outside. Registration opens at 8 a.m., and awards will be given at 3 p.m.
The Schnellville Derby, a 4-mile run/walk, will start at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning; registration opens at 8 a.m.
“It's a four mile walk and run. And it's a lot of hills. I mean, you're talking up and down,” Betz said. “There’s one section, it's about like a roller coaster. You go long ways up, and then you go way down, and then you go right back up again. And it's pretty hilly.”
There will be food. The Schnellville Volunteer Fire Department will sell barbecue and fried chicken dinners on Sunday. The community club will have a food stand both days serving breakfast sandwiches in the morning and hamburgers, pork patties, tenderloin sandwiches, turkey tenders and haystacks, which are homemade potato chips. There will also be an ice cream stand on Sunday.
And there will be entertainment, including kids games and raffles. On Sunday, the country store opens at 10 a.m., a kiddie tractor pull will start at 2 p.m. and the Dubois County Cloggers will perform at 2:30 p.m. “We've got several of the kids that are from Schnellville in that,” Betz said.
Organizers encourage everyone to come out and enjoy the two days of fun with them.
“Come eat the Schnellville Fire Department dinners. That’s the top thing,” Betz said. “And then the rest is just to meet other people there. It's just a good social event.”
All proceeds from the Schnellville Picnic will benefit the Schnellville Community Club and the Schnellville Volunteer Fire Department. More information can be found on the community club’s Facebook page. The schedule is listed below.
