Kenneth “Ken” Schnaus will seek re-election to the Greater Jasper Consolidated School Board’s District 1 seat.
Schnaus feels that during his term on the board he has been instrumental in directing the improvement of the financial condition of Greater Jasper Schools.
“Through my leadership of strong fiscal responsibility and teamwork between the board and the administration, the Corporation has been able to improve its cash reserves to a comfortable and safe balance of close to 10 percent of its annual operating expenses,” Schnaus said in a press release.
He noted several of the school system’s accomplishments during his tenure: raises for teachers, support staff and administrators; additional classrooms and support areas at Ireland Elementary; and the corporation’s new consolidated Jasper Elementary School that is under construction. He also noted that most of the district’s school buildings have had major improvements and or maintenance, including a new playing service at the football stadium and security upgrades at all of the buildings in the corporation.
Schnaus is proud to have been able to help get these projects accomplished without having to raise taxes.
“My experience as a Banker, where I work directly with business owners, has allowed me to not only learn and understand budgeting and financial management, it has allowed me to make the difficult decisions that need to be made to manage finances efficiently,” Schnaus said.
He serves the community on many volunteer boards and committees. He is currently a member of Ireland’s St. Mary Church’s finance committee; a member of the Dubois Strong’s Revolving Loan Committee and the City of Huntingburg’s Revolving Loan Committee; is vice president of the Orange County Economic Development Partnership’s Board of Directors and is secretary-treasurer of the Ireland Utilities Inc.’s board of directors. He is also a member of the Jasper Lions Club and Ireland Knights of Columbus.
Schnaus has been married to the former Marilyn Gogel for 44 years. They have three children: Nicole Schnaus, Kierstie Phillippo and Lance Schnaus. They have four grandchildren: Gage, Rowan, Quinley and Crew. Marilyn runs an in-home day care.
Schnaus is currently a vice president at Springs Valley Bank and Trust Company where he works in the commercial (business) relationship department.
“I believe Greater Jasper is one of the best schools, public or private, in the State of Indiana,” Schnaus said. “I’m proud to have been part of making sure this continues. A school board’s job is to help run the business operation of a school corporation. This Board hires professionals to run the day to day operations while acting as a sound board and advisor to this staff. I believe my background and experiences give me a unique ability to help Greater Jasper to continue to be all it can be while continuing to keep taxes low.”
