FERDINAND — Ferdinand’s 18th Street Park will once again transform into a medieval land this weekend for the fifth annual Rosenvolk German Medieval Festival.

The festival kicks off Friday with a special festival day for school groups, and runs through Sunday evening. As usual, festivalgoers are in for a taste of the olde world through music, performances, vendors and, of course, the renowned joust. The Knights of Valor will return to Ferdinand to showcase their full-contact jousting.

“We’ll always have our jousters,” said Catherine LeBlanc, one of the festival founders.

Also returning this year will be fire breathers, the royal falconer, the Crossed Cannons Celtic pirates and a unicorn. Dream Hayven Farms will bring a unicorn to the festival all three days that children will be able to interact with and even feed.

“The unicorn is going to be a big hit,” LeBlanc said.

This year’s fest will also feature the most well-known performing group yet to take to the Rosenvolk stage: Stary Olsa. Stary Olsa is a Belarusion medieval band that plays everything from music from the period to covers of modern songs that bring a medieval flair to well-known tunes.

Despite not speaking fluent English, LeBlanc said, the members of Stary Olsa also plan to teach medieval games and dances to students during Friday’s school day and to audiences during the annual masquerade ball Saturday night.

Also new to the lineup is Molotov the Gypsy, a sword swallower.

“We try really hard to bring in a couple of new acts every year,” LeBlanc said.

The festival will also include several demonstrations of medieval combat and skills, including how to make vellum for medieval codices. Vellum is fine parchment made originally from the skin of a calf.

LeBlanc expects the festival to draw a large crowd. Last year, she said, about 4,000 people from Indiana and surrounding states attended the festival despite poor weather. This year, she expects closer to 5,000 since the forecast is warm and mostly sunny.

Although LeBlanc loves the entire weekend, her favorite part comes at the end of festival Sunday afternoon. All the performers and event organizers gather one last time for a toast, and the Crossed Cannons sing a song that has a lyric that’s stuck with LeBlanc year after year: We wish everybody good health that is with us today because we may not all be here next year.

The message of the song, she said, is to treasure each moment and the people you’re with because you never know what could happen in the next year. For LeBlanc, every moment spent at the Rosenvolk festival is one to treasure.

“They’ve become my extended family,” she said of the performers and her fellow organizers.

The festival is a ticketed event. Adult day passes are $15, and children’s day passes are $10. An adult weekend pass is $28, and a child weekend pass is $18. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at rosenvolk.com/tickets.php.
