Robert L. Schmitt, 85, Jasper, died at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at his home.
He was born at Jasper on March 5, 1928, to Dominic and Caroline (Mehringer) Schmitt. He married Doris Bartley on Aug. 2, 1951, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Schmitt; two sons, Stanley Schmitt and wife Sandy of Jasper, and Tom Schmitt and wife Debbie of Oakland Township, Mich.; four daughters, Linda Vogler and husband Mike of Celestine, Diane Henke and partner Bob Stayman of Evansville, and Lisa Arvesen and husband Kevin and Gail Mehringer and husband Russ of Jasper; sister Verena Schnaus and husband Leo of Ireland; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ruben, Dominic Jr. and Eugene Schmitt, and a sister, Viola Matthews.
Mr. Schmitt retired after 60 years of farming. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid Indiana University basketball and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum in Jasper.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Becher & Kluesner Downtown Chapel in Jasper.
