Road work to affect area highways
May 15, 2020From Local Sources
Upcoming Indiana Department of Transportation highway projects will affect Jasper-, Ferdinand- and Birdseye-area commutes.
Each project is slated to start on or around May 26.
Jasper
In Jasper, INDOT plans a complete road closure for State Road 164 near Jasper for a drainage structure replacement project.
Maintenance crews will close State Road 164 about 900 feet east of Greener Road to replace the culvert, requiring excavation across all lanes of traffic.
Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure but through traffic should use the official detour following U.S. 231 and state roads 56 and 545.
The work is expected to last for about a day depending upon weather conditions with crews beginning at 7 a.m.
Ferdinand
Also on or around May 26, crews will close State Road 162 north of Ferdinand between county roads 700S and 815S to excavate and replace a drainage pipe.
During this operation, INDOT says, the road will be completely closed to through traffic with detours marked at state roads 64 and 264.
The work is expected to last until the end of May with the official detour following I-64, U.S. 231 and State Road 64.
Also affecting the Ferdinand area on or around May 26 is a pavement rehabilitation on State Road 264. Contractors will close one lane of the highway between State Road 162 all the way to the end of State Road 264 for workers to perform deep patching and resurfacing operations.
Crews will be fixing areas of pavement that have weakened or deteriorated over time due to normal usage. Once the patches are complete, they will mill the top layer of asphalt off to add a new driving surface.
INDOT says that during the project, one lane will be open at all times. However, the open lane will be restricted to a 9-foot width. Loads wider than 9 feet will need to seek an alternate route.
Work is expected to be complete by mid-July depending upon weather conditions.
Birdseye
INDOT plans a complete road closure for State Road 145 south of Birdseye on or around May 26 for a drainage structure replacement.
Contractors will close the highway about 5 miles north of I-64 to replace a small drainage structure, INDOT says. The work will require excavation across all lanes of traffic, followed by replacement of the pavement.
Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure but through traffic should use an official detour following I-64 and state roads 37 and 145.
Work on State Road 145 is expected to be complete by the end of July, depending on weather conditions.
During all the work, INDOT is urging drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
Huntingburg
Work to a highway bridge will close State Road 64 west of the Holland Junction.
INDOT says contractors will close the State Road 64 bridge spanning Rock Creek about 2 miles west of State Road 161 on or around May 26.
The project to repair the bridge deck is expected to last until the end of June, depending on weather conditions.
Local traffic will have access up to the point of closure but through traffic should use the official detour following state roads 61, 68 and 161.
INDOT asks that drivers slow down and stay alert near crews during the project.
