Reds dominate, defeat Velvet Bombers by run rule

From Herald Staff Reports

The Jasper Reds were well aware they had to face a few tough opponents this week. However, they got off to a rather impressive start on Wednesday as they defeated the Owensboro Velvet Bombers 15-0 in five innings at Alvin C. Ruxer Field to improve to 12-0 this season. With the victory, the Reds have now won 33 consecutive regular season games.

Jasper started off hot right away as they scored 12 runs in the first inning to take full control of the game. The Reds had two three-run homers in the very first inning — Jasper grad Noah Luebbehusen hit a three-run bomb and Washington alum Ben Lambert also hit a three-run dinger, his third of the season. Northeast Dubois’ Reece Bauer and Evansville Harrison grad LaWan Rollins also both had doubles in the victory.

On the mound, Devon Franz improved to 3-0 on the season as he pitched four innings of near-perfect baseball. He didn’t give up any hits and walked only one batter while striking out four. Kris Weisheit, a Northeast Dubois grad, closed the game in relief.

The Reds will be back in action this Sunday at home against Shelbyville (Ky.) with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m.
