JASPER — A Jasper man wanted on felony counts of rape and molestation in Martin County is in custody after being arrested Tuesday by members of the U.S. Marshals and Indiana State Police in Jasper.
State police were contacted Tuesday, May 28, to assist the Loogootee Police Department in investigating a reported rape.
During the course of a state police detective’s investigation, it was allegedly discovered that Dakota L. Browning, 26, 1300 Dewey St., Jasper, had met a juvenile victim at a graduation party and had gone to a residence in Loogootee with the victim following the party.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 26, according to state police, it is alleged that Browning went into the bedroom where the victim was sleeping and had sexual intercourse with her against her will.
The investigation gathered enough probable cause for the Martin Circuit Court to issue an arrest warrant charging Browning the Level 1 felony child molestation and Level 3 felony rape.
At around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, members of the U.S. Marshals and Indiana State Police located Browning at 1300 Dewey St. in Jasper.
After entering the residence and giving commands, police reported that Browning failed to comply. State police then deployed a K-9 and took Browning into custody.
Police took Browning to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center for treatment of wounds that he suffered during the K-9 deployment. Once released from the hospital, Browning was transported to the Martin County Jail without any further incident.
In announcing the apprehension, police noted all suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
