PTO secretary arrested after allegedly stealing funds

OAKLAND CITY — Indiana State Police Detective Tobias Odom initiated a criminal investigation Aug. 13 after receiving information that unauthorized purchases were recently discovered on the Wood Memorial PTO bank account.

During the investigation, Odom revealed the PTO’s secretary, Stephanie Rhoton, 36, of Oakland City, allegedly made several unauthorized purchases between July 8 and July 24 totaling more than $4,180.

One unauthorized purchase was allegedly for parasailing while recently vacationing in Daytona Beach.

After reviewing the criminal investigation, the Gibson County Prosecutor’s Office issued a warrant for Rhoton’s arrest.

Police say she was arrested Thursday afternoon after turning herself in at the Oakland City Police Department. Rhoton was taken to the Gibson County Jail where she is currently being held on bond.

Her preliminary charges include fraud on a financial institution, a Level 5 felony, and fraud, a Level 6 felony.

In announcing the arrest, police reminded the public that all criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
