JASPER — Police arrested a man early Wednesday, accusing him of impaired driving after a traffic stop.
A Jasper Police Department officer reported having to stop his patrol car at the Newton Street and Schuetter Road intersection when a passenger car disregarded the traffic signal, made a wide right turn and crossed the centerline at 3:33 a.m.
The officer stopped the car in the 1900 block of Newton Street, detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and began an investigation that resulted in pills that were a controlled substance being located.
Police allege the driver, Damien W. Matheis, 18, 5790 N. State Road 545, Dubois, later tested as having benzodiazepine and marijuana in his system after being transported to Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.
Authorities booked Matheis into the Dubois County Security Center at 11:25 a.m. on preliminary misdemeanor counts that included operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance. Police said Matheis posted bond that afternoon.
