Police arrest man with stolen U-Haul

JASPER — Police took an out-of-state man into custody early Sunday after being notified that subjects from West Virginia in a stolen U-Haul truck were thought to be on Jasper’s north side.

The Jasper Police Department was dispatched to the north side of the city at 12:16 a.m. and located the occupied U-Haul truck in the Home Depot parking lot at 4250 Newton St.

Officers who took the truck’s driver, Pliant K. Smith, 20, Huntington, West Virginia, into custody allege he was also found to unlawfully possess a syringe.

Authorities booked Smith into the Dubois County Security Center at 3:23 a.m. on preliminary Level 6 felony counts of theft and unlawful possession of a syringe.
