Plain Air Painting session is Saturday

JASPER — Jasper Community Arts is preparing for its fourth annual Plein Air Painting event. The event will take place in Dubois County Saturday, Aug. 4, in connection with the Jasper Strassenfest.

Plein Air is painting outdoors rather than in a studio. The term comes from the French ‘en plein air’, meaning ‘in the open air.’  The Impressionists were particularly interested in the influence of changing light and the effects of light on color when outdoors. Monet is a popular example of a plein air painter.

Artists must sign in and have their canvases stamped prior to painting. Registration will be located at the upper entrance of The Parklands, in the back parking lot of KlubHaus61, 2031 Newton St.

This particular kind of event is popular and has taken place nationwide in numerous cities and towns. The event cost is $25 to participate. Monetary prizes awarded are $500, first place; $300, second place; and $200, third. After spending the day painting, artists will prepare and frame artwork for judging at 4 p.m. Awards and judging will take place directly after at 4:30 p.m. Early registration online at jasperarts.corsizio is encouraged; however, artists may register the day of the event.
