Picnic is ‘like a big reunion’ for SchnellvilleSeptember 10, 2019

SCHNELLVILLE — There are two main reasons why the Schnellville Picnic has continued since its start more than 30 years ago.
The event, which started in the mid-1980s on the grounds of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, brings former community members back to their hometown the second weekend of September each year.
“The people who got married and moved away, they come back to see everyone,” said Myron Betz, president of the Schnellville Community Club and one of the event organizers. “All the people who moved away, they come back. It’s like a big reunion, basically.”
The second reason is that the proceeds from the festival, which runs Saturday and Sunday on the club’s grounds, go back into things that benefit the community as a whole, Betz explained.
For instance, the Schnellville Fire Department sells barbecue and fried chicken dinners, which raises money for the department. The playground equipment on the community club’s grounds was paid for with money raised at the festival. And the outdoor circular walking track was just repaved and widened to 6 feet.
“It’s unbelievable how many people use it, like for rehab and everything else,” Betz said. “All we raise, it’s for the community.”
The fest’s main events are pretty much the same as in previous years. On Saturday, there will be the annual car show. Registration runs from 8 a.m. to noon that day, and the first 50 registered cars will get a dash plaque. Awards will be given at 3 p.m., and there will also be door prizes.
An arts and craft market was previously announced for Saturday, but has been canceled for this year. “We couldn’t get anyone (vendors) to come.” Betz explained. “So we’re not going to have that.”
The Schnellville Derby, a 4-mile run/walk, will be held Sunday. Registration will start at 8 a.m., and the race will start at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children 13 and younger. An awards ceremony will be held after the race.
There will also be a kiddie tractor pull, a country store, raffles and performance by the Dubois County Cloggers on Sunday.
Additional information about events can be found on the Schnellville Community Club’s Facebook page.
