Several persons from the Zoar congregation and the surrounding community were in Evansville Saturday to pay their respects to the family of Brett Hilsmeyer.
In the year 1926, four young men from the Zoar congregation formed a quartet. The four men were Earl Hemmer, Melvin Weitkamp, Melvin Bartelt and Moody Langebrake. During the next 50 years the men sang for camp meetings, church services and community events. Moody Langebrake had to be away for a time and when he was gone his place was filled by Floyd Weitkamp. The church celebrated the men in 1976 when their 50th year of singing was observed. Time and health issues began to take their toll and four younger men from the congregation were available to fill in when needed. The four men were Ralph Hemmer, Don Bohnenkemper, Allen Bilderback and Fred Hemmer. Through the years, several ladies were pianists for the quartet. They were Alma Hemmer, Irene Sandleban, Ruby Hilsmeyer, Luella Hemmer and Becky Brockriede.
On Oct. 13, the Zoar congregation will celebrate their 175th anniversary. We are hopeful that all past and present members and guests will join us on that day for this special celebration.
A planning session for this year’s EPIC activities took place Saturday evening at the church. The start-up date for EPIC will be coming soon.
A birthday celebration for several of the grandchildren was held Sunday evening at the home of Bill and Jean Meece, Huntingburg. A meal, several birthday cakes and swimming were all on the agenda.
The Weitkamp reunion will be held Sunday in the church basement. Plan to attend and bring favorite dishes for the carry-in meal at noon. Also bring any updates for your family’s history such as weddings, births and deaths.
Fundraising is underway for the new building in the grove. It is hoped that this new fellowship center will be completed in time for next year’s Mosquito Fest.
The Zoar Cemetery Association will have their annual meeting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3.
