The children of the area have returned to school. Both Southridge and Pike Central began the new school year on Thursday.
A benefit luncheon will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at the church for Robert “Bomber” and Sandy Rodenhouse. Sandwiches, salads and desserts will be served. There will be a silent auction. The proceeds will go to help with medical and other expenses for the Rodenhouse family.
The Simpson family had its annual family reunion at Gentryville Saturday evening. Several family members from the area attended.
The Southern Belles Extension Homemakers Club will have an outing on Aug. 16 at Lake Helmerich Village. Diane Leon will be the hostess. The gathering is set for 6:30 p.m.
The descendants of Hermann Heinrich Wibbeler held a reunion on Sunday in the church basement. Guests came as far as Louisville and Kansas City. Following dinner, Bill Bartelt spoke on the life of Wesley Sakel, who died following injuries he sustained while helping to dig for gold in the Cup Creek bottoms in 1916. It has been said that the excavators dug to a depth of 23 feet looking for treasure, but found none. Wesley was the son of Lizzie Wibbeler Sakel.
