Our Town: Celestine

The last Sunday of each month is Haiti Sunday where we remember our brothers and sisters at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Dupity, Haiti. There are boxes at the doors for you to make a donation to our friends in Haiti.

Memorial Day activities

Memorial Day Mass will begin at 8 a.m. at St. Celestine Catholic Church with the memorial service to follow at 8:30 a.m. by the St. Anthony American Legion and Auxiliary Post 493 in the St. Celestine Cemetery.

Religious education, VBS forms

Forms for the 2019-20 school year, along with 2019 VBS registrations, were mailed this week. Extra copies can be found at the main church entrances as well as on the website. Read all the information as some times and locations have changed. All forms are due to the parish office by Monday, July 1.

Donations for workcamp

Donations are needed for the Catholic Heart Workcamp In June. We have 22 adults and youth attending the workcamp in Louisville from June 16 to 22. Each participant is required to bring a paint brush, roller cover and drop cloth. Participants can also bring painters tape, a paint tray, a small bucket, a paint scraper and rags for cleaning. If you can help by donating any of these items, contact Connie Matheis or the parish office.

Senior citizens dinner

St. Isidore Parish Senior Citizens are asked to make their reservations for the Wednesday, June 12, dinner by Monday, June 3. The evening will begin with a 6 p.m. Mass followed by dinner. Everything will be held at the Celestine Community Club. Invitations were mailed this past week. Call the parish office at 812-634-1875 to make reservations.

Parish council nominations

Parish council nominations are being sought for new members. Members are elected to a three-year term. Qualifications are:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Must be an active member of the parish (registered member for at least one year.)

Practicing Catholic visible at Sunday worship with the community and faithful to teaching and living the doctrine and practice of the Catholic Church.

Must be able to attend parish council meetings. Meetings are held once a month on the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The location rotates from St. Celestine Campus to the St. Raphael Campus.

All nominations are due to the parish office by Monday, June 10. Voting will take place the weekend of July 27-28.

Current parish council members are Teresa Betz, Jennifer Bieker, Joe DeKemper, Jeremy Mundy, Joyce Hulsman, Whitley Kluesner, Kurt Hassfurther, Clarence Reckelhoff, Kathy Hopf, Stacy Brosmer, Ian Denu and Jeff Betz. Teresa Betz, Jennifer Bieker, Joe DeKemper and Jeremy Mundy will be leaving the council in August.

Religious education nominations

New members are being sought for the Religious Education Commission at St. Isidore. Members are elected to a three year term. Qualifications are:

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Practicing Catholic visible at Sunday worship with the community and faithful to teaching and living the doctrine and practice of the Catholic Church.

Is familiar with or willing to learn about the religious education program.

Cares about the religious education for our youth and our future.

Can help with creating insights and ideas for the best interest of our youth.

Is willing to create a dream for our program and establish goals to get there.

Can attend commission meeting every other month (six per year).

Is willing to assist with religious education fundraisers for the benefit of the budget.

All nominations are due to the parish office by Monday, June 10. Voting will take place the weekend of July 27-28.

Current members are Mallory Hall, Laine Busick, Kevin Knies, Audrey Denu, Cassie Beyke and Ben Gessner.  Mallory Hall and Laine Busick will be going off the commission in August.

Final vows

Susan Reuber will be making her Perpetual Monastic Profession on Saturday, June 22, at Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beach Grove. This is the final step taken by a woman in their Benedictine community. She vows for the rest of her life to follow the teachings of St. Benedict and to be bound to their particular community. Through her life as a Benedictine Sister she commits herself to seeking God in everyone and everything and every day of her life.

Streetfest

Volunteers are still needed for the Celestine Streetfest. To volunteer, pick an event and contact the person listed next to the activity:

Hamburger stand: Good Shepherd of the Hills Knights of Columbus: Ted Schnackertz, 812-389-2529.

Dinner stand: Celestine Park, Allen Thewes, 812-630-8890.

Beer garden: Celestine Community Club, Ryan Hasenour 812-630-4210 .

Kids Zone: Celestine PTO, Ashley Meyer 812-630-4342.

240 Wheel Running: 5 to 7 p.m. in two one-hour shifts. Sellers and clerks are needed. Larry Schepers, 812-678-4807.

Fest setup: Wednesday and Thursday, June 26-27 at 6 p.m.; Friday, June 28, remaining preparations. Volunteers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to help. Help is needed to set up all of the stands, tables, fence, stage, tents, parking, signage, and so forth. Food and drinks will be provided.

Fest day of trash collection: Point person and volunteers for shifts throughout the day; Marc Lampert, 812-639-0428.

Sunday cleanup: Point person and volunteers Sunday morning and afternoon to help clean up the grounds; Marc Lampert, 812-639-0428.

Super 5K: New course is four miles; 7:15 a.m., registration; 8 a.m., race starts; new start location, Celestine Parish Hall. Registration form available at the main church entrances or at www.celestineindiana.com.

Car show: Saturday, June 29, Celestine Park; registration, 8 a.m.

Car cruise: Sunday, June 23 (held the Sunday before Streetfest at Celestine Park). Noon, registration; leaving from Celestine Park at 1 p.m.

Streetfest T-Shirts will be sold after all Masses this weekend. Shirts are $10 each (2XL and 3XL are $13). There is a limited supply of youth shirts. If you want a T-shirt but will not be at Mass, contact Martha Goepfrich at 812-631-5566.

Beginning at 1 p.m., there will be a Celestine scavenger hunt. All ages are welcome to participate in this hour of fun spent getting to know the area and meeting new people. Teams can be up to six people. The team captain will need a phone or camera. All members of the team must travel together and be present in each team photo. The scavenger hunt will be in the immediate area; no crossing the highway. The winner will be the team with the most points within one hour. Registration will be from noon to 12:45 p.m. under the main tent with the hunt beginning at 1 p.m. Contact Kelly Bieker for more information at 812-639-7630.

The supper time hours will feature a series of fun community competitions on the main stage. Games will be friendly for all ages and will be a great way for the community to have fun.
