Oscar Hurst, 91, Jasper, died at 9:44 p.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, at The Timbers of Jasper.
He was born in Ireland June 8, 1922, to John and Ida (Pfeffer) Hurst. His wife, the former Myrtle Sallee, died July 26, 2008.
Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Streicher of South Carolina, Donna Caruso and husband Wayne of Indianapolis and Cathy Bosler and husband Mike of Jasper; six sons, Cliff Shirley of Ocala, Fla., Curt Shirley and wife Karen of Orange County, Calif., Mike Hurst of Arthur, Ill., and Dave Hurst and wife Suzanne, Don Hurst and wife Linda and Kenny Hurst and wife Sharon, all of Jasper; 27 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter Jackie Crouse; a son, Gregory J. Hurst; a sister, Mary Ann Hurst; and six brothers, Gene Hurst and Ted, Sylvester, George, Florian and Ambrose Sermersheim.
Mr. Hurst worked as truck driver for many years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 673, American Legion Post 147 and the Jasper Moose Lodge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Jasper. VFW Post 673 will conduct military graveside rites.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church or a favorite charity.
