Ornament reflects wood industry tiesNovember 30, 2018
JASPER — The Indiana State Museum is celebrating its Celebration Crossing holiday experience by featuring ornaments representing all 92 Indiana counties.
Artist Emily Colucci Peak, Jasper, is behind this year’s ornament representing Dubois County.
Peak creates from her home studio and is the gallery curator and visual arts coordinator at the Jasper Arts Center. Art has been a part of her everyday life from a young age. Growing up with an artist father and a very art supportive family, there was never a question whether Peak would pursue the arts as a career. She works in many mediums, including sculpture, metal, ceramics, printmaking, photography and painting. Her award winning work has been shown in galleries throughout Indiana and in Florence, Italy.
“I am honored to represent Dubois County at the Indiana State Museum in the 2018 County Tree Ornament Project,” Peak said. “The small town feel with big opportunities and a supportive arts community are only a few reasons why I adore our county. Dubois County has often been called the 'Wood Capital of the World,' meaning it was only right for me to create a piece made out of some type of wood.”
Peak chose to cut the wood into the shape of Dubois County and feature the Patoka River and Lake. “The simplicity of the piece,” according to Peak, “reflects the people who live here – easy going and down to earth.”
The tree will be on display through the new year at the museum, located at 650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.
