Ohio man charged with marijuana possession

From Local Sources

JASPER — An Ohio man was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession this week in a proceeding linked to a traffic stop last month.

Court records indicate Alex D. Merkel, 24, Cincinnati, Ohio, was stopped by the Huntingburg Police Department on Dec. 26 for allegedly doing 36 mph in the 25 mph zone on Main Street. The officer smelled the odor of raw marijuana and allegedly located marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle.

Merkel was released on his own recognizance at the time.

On Tuesday, a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana was filed in Dubois Superior Court. Merkel’s initial hearing is set for Feb. 3.
