New north side pizza parlor a family affairDecember 8, 2017

JASPER — Father and son duo Bob and Nathan Cates are getting ready to open a pizza parlor.
In the next couple weeks, the pair will open Robear’s Pizza on the north side of Jasper at 3561 Newton St.
Robear’s will offer carryout and delivery within Jasper’s city limits. The menu will be kept simple: pizza, breadsticks, strombolis and subs. Bob has been in the pizza business for almost 30 years and said he’s never been one to let the menu get too big.
“What we do, we do well,” he said.
The name comes from a nickname Bob’s cousin, Bill Thomas, gave him. Bob’s full name is Robert. Robear is German for Robert, so Thomas, a German teacher, dubbed his cousin Robear.
Robear’s will be located behind the Wendy’s on Newton Street. The two chose that site because there aren’t other businesses providing the same service in that part of town. Little Caesars and the Schnitz Brewery & Pub both serve pizza on the north side of town, but neither offers delivery.
Bob and Nathan first went into business together when they owned Villa Pizzeria on Third Avenue by the Patoka River. They sold the business in August, and Bob planned to retire. Soon, though, the two realized they missed being in business together. The two decided to go back into business together with Robear’s. To Bob, it’s been more fun than work.
“It’s a good mix of work and public,” he said. “It’s not all in the public, and it’s not all work.”
Robear’s food will be made fresh daily from scratch with quality ingredients, Bob said, and he’s changed up his recipes and menu a bit to prepare for the new venture.
The price will be competitive with other local pizza restaurants, although the Cateses are more concerned with the quality of their food than the price.
“The product is what we’re mostly concerned with,” Bob said.
Bob and Nathan are putting the finishing touches on their business and finalizing the delivery routes. Once that’s finished, Bob said, they’ll be ready to open. He expects to be up and running before the first of the year.
For now, Robear’s will be open evenings only, Tuesday through Sunday. Their phone number is 812-482-9006.
