Meeting: Solid Waste Management District

The Dubois County Solid Waste Management District Board met Monday and:

• Heard from Director Carla Striegel-Winner that the district is investigating recycling grant possibilities available through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

• Received an update from Enforcement Assistant Randy Boehm on a property maintenance ordinance that went into effect in April. The ordinance consolidates the county’s junk and weed ordinances into one and is more restrictive on what constitutes a junk violation.

• Heard that the fourth annual Dubois County Creek Sweep will take place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Participants will help clean roadside ditches and creeks with volunteers meeting at the Dubois County Solid Waste District office at 1103 S. 350W, Jasper, for registration and refreshments. Maps and supplies will be provided, and then the volunteers will be directed to pre-selected sites. Volunteers should wear boots or sturdy shoes, if possible. Gloves and trash bags will be provided along with reflective vests, buckets and trash grabbers. Door prizes will be awarded after the volunteers return to the office to unload.

• Issued a reminder that the Dubois County Medication Collection is set for Saturday as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Pharmaceutical Drug Take Back event. The Indiana State Police Jasper Post, 2209 Newton St., will host the collection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Birdseye Fire Station, 9 W. First St., Birdseye, and the Ireland Fire Station, 5053 W. Main St., Ireland, will host from 10 a.m. to noon. The Huntingburg and Jasper police stations also accept pharmaceuticals 24/7 in their drop boxes located at 503 E. First St., Huntingburg, and 309 E. Sixth St., Jasper. Expired or unused prescription medications are accepted, including liquid and pill medications. The program does not accept needles.
