Meeting: Jasper Common Council

The Jasper Common Council met Wednesday and:

• Continued the ongoing discussion about pool fences. City code currently requires fences around swimming pools, and in recent months, a handful of Jasper government boards have discussed the possibility of allowing mechanical pool covers to take the place of a fenced-in enclosure. Representatives from the Jasper Plan Commission and Jasper Board of Zoning Appeals expressed concerns with allowing covers to take the place of fences on Wednesday. Common Councilman John Bell spoke in favor of the covers potentially taking the place of fences in some cases.

• Heard a Dubois Strong update from Ed Cole, the organization’s director. Recent highlights include a Tour of Opportunity for high school freshmen across the county, the Southwest Indiana Agriculture Economic Summit, looking into the expansion of rural broadband and more.

• Heard a Utility Service Board report from General Utilities Manager Bud Hauersperger. On Monday, among other things, the board tentatively approved a $9,218 bid for an underground locator for the electric department, took bids for chemicals under advisement and heard that the Beaver Lake drain will be opened on Monday, Dec. 2.

• Approved ordinances amending certain park department fees, transfer appropriations within a department for the 2019 budget and changing the start time for monthly meetings. The Common Council will now meet at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday following the third Monday of the month, at City Hall, 610 Main Street.
