Meeting: Dubois County Airport Authority

The Dubois County Airport Authority met Monday and:

• Heard an update about the idea of getting dirt for its runway project from the Huntingburg Conservation Club’s lake. A story is on Page 1.

• Decided to stick with its lease proposal for a hangar being used jointly by OFS Brands Holdings of Huntingburg, and BK of DC LLC of Jasper. That proposal is for a three-year lease for $14,820 per year, with the option of a five-year renewal at $18,720 per year. OFS has signed the lease, but BK and DC countered with an offer of $11,232 per year for a three-year lease and $12,000 per year for a five-year lease. The previous 10-year lease, which ended in 2016, charged $520 per month for nine of those years and $780 per month for the last year. With that, BK of DC LLC has spent more than $150,000 making improvements on the hangar, which was part of the lease agreement. Airport board attorney Phil Schneider said that the Federal Aviation Administration wants airports to charge fair market rates, which are 20 to 23 cents per square foot; the contract proposed by the airport is 19 cents per square foot, he said. BK of DC LLC has until the end of August to either sign the lease or move out of the hangar.

• Learned that U.S. Congressman Larry Bucshon will visit the Huntingburg Airport at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30. Airport Manager Travis McQueen encouraged board members to come meet him to share any issues or concerns with him.
