JASPER — Authorities have identified the victim in a Tuesday afternoon fatality southeast of Jasper linked to a medical condition.
Larry J. Fogleman, 66, of Greenwood, was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital following the 3:45 p.m. accident along State Road 162, 2,605 feet south of Schnellville Road.
Fogleman’s wife, 62-year-old Nancy E. Fogleman, also of Greenwood, suffered what were termed minor injuries.
Dubois County Communications Center dispatchers alerted the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department to a single-vehicle crash with entrapment along State Road 162 just north of the Maltersville Bridge at 3:46 p.m..
Deputies and Jasper Volunteer Fire Department first responders arrived a short time later to find a 2005 Buick LaCrosse off the east side of the highway, down a steep embankment, on its roof in a ditch.
The Foglemans were trapped inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department.
Authorities say Mr. Fogleman was not conscious but Mrs. Fogleman was conscious and alert.
First responders extricated both subjects.
Deputies said Jasper first responders rendered medical aid to Mr. Fogleman before he was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital. The sheriff’s department is reporting he passed away at the hospital due to an unspecified medical condition.
Mrs. Fogleman, who police said suffered minor scrapes, was also transported to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The sheriff’s department said Mr. Fogleman was driving northbound on State Road 162 when he experienced the medical condition that caused him to lose control of his Buick. The car abruptly traveled off the east side of the highway and down the steep embankment, rolling several times before stopping on its top, according to the sheriff’s department.
The crash that totaled the vehicle closed the highway for about 40 minutes. The Jasper Police Department diverted southbound traffic on the State Road 162 bypass at Schnellville Road. Indiana State Police diverted northbound traffic away from the scene on State Road 162.
A Uebelhor & Sons wrecker and Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services also assisted.
Because the couple was from Johnson County, south of Indianapolis, the sheriff’s department said, Mrs. Fogleman had requested that she be given time to notify her family and friends of the passing of her husband.
Tuesday’s accident was Dubois County’s seventh roadway fatality of 2017.
