Mass recognized religious education program

From Local Sources

JASPER — A special Mass was held Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper to bring recognition to the SPRED religious education program offered for adults with special needs. Several members participated in the Mass by serving, reading, presenting offertory gifts and more.

The SPRED program began in 1972 under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Evansville. Sister Barbara C. Schmitz started the program in all Evansville Catholic churches, Jasper, Ireland, Huntingburg, St. Meinrad and Tell City. It flourished at St. Joseph in Jasper when Mary Miller, Carol Verkamp and Rosina Schuler saw the benefits of a religious social gathering for adults with special needs.

SPRED meetings are held once a month at the St. Joseph Parish Center and 15 to 20 people typically attend. Catechists present lessons, the group participates in an activity or craft and light refreshments are offered.
