JASPER — Police took a man and a woman into custody late Monday night and accused them of shoplifting at Walmart.

The Jasper Police Department was called to the 4040 N. Newton St. store at 11:15 p.m. after store asset protection staff detained 27-year-old Zackary A. Wheatley of Petersburg and 25-year-old Ashli M. Kempf of 3307 Newton St., Jasper.

Authorities allege barcodes on merchandise were swapped out with ones from less expensive items before Wheatley and Kempf went to the self-checkout area. They are accused of trying to take miscellaneous items with a total value of $36.27.

Wheatley and Kempf were booked into the Dubois County Security Center early this morning on preliminary misdemeanor counts of theft.
